Bumper car in fire at North Carolina theme park

A bumper of the car suddenly caught fire at Charlotte’s Carowinds amusement park on 4 June.

Parkgoers at a North Carolina amusement park were in for a scare when a bumper of the car suddenly burst into flames earlier this week. Fortunately, a ride attendant quickly extinguished the flames, and no one was injured.

The incident took place in the amusement park Carowinds in Charlotte on June 4, when the double-seat bumper of the car the vehicle with the Dog’ems ride caught fire, Fox 46 reports.

A representative for the park said that the last passenger to ride on the bumper of the car the vehicle before the fire started. It remains unclear at this time exactly what it ablaze.

“[It is] nothing of what I had ever expected, but [you] never know when something like this would ever happen,” witness Scott Spainhour told CBS 17 of the incident, which happened around 12:30 pm to Watch his children, Spainhour cleared children from the area and took video of the flames.

“The ride attendant immediately responded with a fire extinguisher trained,” the amusement park told Fox 46 in a statement. In the days since the Dog’ems ride has been inspected, tested, and then resume the normal activities, a representative for the park is added.

Fox 46 was followed the next day with the interview of parkgoers about the incident, with many voicing feelings of shock.

“The first thing I thought of was, hopefully, no one was injured,” said avid parkgoer Cecilia Dennis. “Secondly, I will probably never ride the bumper cars.”

“In all my 30 years, she was born and raised and have gone to Carowinds, because I can’t even remember, I’ve never ever had anything go wrong here,” she added.

“That’s so scary,” Cortney Cordell agreed. “I have two kids myself so I trust the rides to be safe and it makes me question the safety of the rides there.”

As for the site itself, Carowinds theme park is a 400 acre theme park, located on the border of North and South Carolina, a press release confirms. Although the Dog’ems ride is on the South Carolina side of the park, the North Carolina Department of Labor told Fox 46 that the park is inspected every year before opening.

“Our inspectors are out there working hard to ensure that there rides are 100 percent manufacturer specifications for the open ride to the public,” said Mary Katherine Revels, NC Department of Labor.
