NEW YORK – A U.S. citizen who joined al-Qaeda and took part in a failed 2009 suicide attack on a U.s. military base in Afghanistan will spend 45 years in prison.
Muhanad Mahmoud Al Farekh was sentenced Tuesday in Brooklyn federal court.
Farekh case attracted additional attention because of reports that Us officials had initially discussed whether to try to kill him in a drone strike, a step almost never against AMERICAN citizens. The democratic President Barack Obama ultimately decided to try for a capture-and civil prosecution.
The Houston-born suspect was captured in Pakistan and brought to the U.S. in 2015.
