Defense Specialist Allison Barrie takes a look at some of the most exciting developments in the defence tech to keep an eye on in 2019. These advances can be divided in 5 key conflict areas: sea, air, land, space and cyber. Of the F-35B fighter jets to the future of the U.S. Space Force Fox Firepower includes them all.

The US army is modernisation of the armed forces in preparation for a potential new era of the war around the corner.

2018 was certainly a year packed with defense headlines as the defence industry was re-ratified in all sectors and innovation to meet the requirements of the U.S. troops was revived.

So if we kick off this new year, that defense stories to the Americans to keep an eye on?

We have compiled five of the many exciting defense advances that have made headlines over the last year. These five stories will continue to grow in the coming years. There is one from each of the five fundamental areas where we stand for the current and new emerging threats: land, air, sea, space and cyber.

New warships with laser weapons, the next-gen of extreme off-road driving, safer vehicles, this generation of ‘humvees,’ landmark moments for the most advanced fifth generation fighter jet in the world, the historic creation of a new Space Command and the “Space Force”… and finally where to stay tuned for the next wave of AI (artificial intelligence) where giant things are quietly happening.

New destroyers with laser weapons

Ten new powerful destroyers, can decimate more types of enemy threat, and at even greater distances, will be added to the fleet. And these destroyers can be armed with futuristic laser weapons.

NEW ‘NO ESCAPE’ METEOR MISSILES BOOST FIGHTER JETS’ FIREPOWER

The new Arleigh-Burke class warships are a part of the very wise shift in the direction of the fast increase of the surface area of the fleet and will certainly expand the power and strike reach of the U.S. army. The fierce looks only of the Arleigh-Burke class destroyers at more than 500 meters long, with a nearly 60 meters in width, the deportation of about 10,000 tons, please send a very clear message to potential adversaries of the US.

Current destroyers are already pack a wallop, providing a range of powerful weapons and planes.

There is a devastating array of firepower such as missiles, such as the hard-hitting, Tomahawks, standard ones (SM-2MR), vertical launch ASROC, and evolved Sea Sparrow.

For threats below the water surface, they can use their six MK-46 torpedoes launched from two triple tube mounts.

Must be a threat as a surveillance drone or a small craft close, then the sailors could unleash weapons such as the Close-In Weapon System (CIWS) and the 5-in. MK 45 Gun.

Aircraft further expand the ships’ firepower. They can carry two helicopters armed with MK 46/MK 50 torpedoes for underwater threats such as submarines and Penguin/Hellfire missiles for the above-surface threats like enemy warships.

UNDERGROUND TERROR: CAN TECH DEFEAT UNDER THE GROUND HIDDEN THREATS?

The new “Flight III” Destroyers will be even more advanced, loaded with cutting-edge new tech like advanced new engines and an improved radar … not to mention those laser weapons.

The Navy ordered $9 billion worth of next-gen Arleigh Burke class destroyers to be built by Huntington Ingalls Industries and General Dynamics Bath Iron Works.

New extreme off-road, max the protection of vehicles for the Army

More than 6,000 new, extreme off-road, max protection of the vehicles will be in the hands of the AMERICAN armed forces. Not to be confused with Oshkosh that makes the cute kids’ bib and brace overalls, Oshkosh Defense is a serious player in defense with almost a century of deep experience and expertise.

Oshkosh Defense won the JLTV (joint light tactical vehicle) act, which will be replaced by the iconic “Humvees.” In 2018, the U.S. Army bought $1.69 billion of these next-gen vehicles. This is the last in the shift in the direction of this state-of-the-art fighting vehicle. Back in 2015, the military bought $ 6.7 billion worth of JLTVs.

JLTVs will be the new “humvee” for soldiers and marines that will be sure to take advantage of the remarkable progress. Oshkosh TAK-4i intelligent independent suspension system gives soldiers a way smoother ride in the fight.

They will also be able to take advantage of the extreme off-road driving, great manoeuvrability which will be ultra-helpful in dealing with the threats, and it is also very important, is the Oshkosh JLTV will provide greatly improved protection against a range of threats such as IED blasts that were previously fatal.

ARMY SETS SIGHTS ON NEW SNIPER CAMOUFLAGE

This is the next level of protection for our armed forces. Instead of the classic armor, every detail has been considered to improve the safety for the people inside. There is a futuristic ship that can withstand hardcore violence of the enemy, or attacks with ballistic or bomb explosion. There is even a special system that absorbs and deflects bomb attack energy of the people inside.

Inside the car, there is a large number of measures taken in order to help keep the forces safe, such as special chairs that are designed to protect against a bombing.

These new vehicles are so sharp and fully loaded with advanced features, there is even an automatic fire-extinguishing systems.

F-35B stealth fighter jet’s first combat deployment

The groundbreaking fifth-generation Joint Strike Fighter Jet, the Lightning II, made history in 2018, when the F-35B successfully completed its first combat mission.

On Sept. 27, the F-35B performed the first combat strike in support of Operation Freedom Sentinel by successfully dropping bombs on targets in Afghanistan.

The Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 211 F-35Bs in the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit departed California in July and in September she was now a member of the AMERICAN 5th Fleet.

EXCITING NEW MEDICAL ‘SILVER BULLETS’ TO SAVE MILITARY LIVES

The marine Corps variant is the STOVL – short take off/vertical landing. In fact, this aircraft is a complete breakthrough in heaps of ways – not the least of which is that it is the first supersonic STOVL stealth aircraft in the world. This method offers great advantages, such as great flexibility and a fast access to the combat zones by the use of a wider range of ships, as well as rudimentary landing areas, in contrast to the right base runways, closer to the front to fight.

Space Force commands

In a monumental move, President Trump signed an order the launch of a new U.S. Space Command. One of the tasks is likely to be the development of ways to defend American space assets such as satellites, which are vital for the US forces’ communications, surveillance, navigation, and more.

An increased focus on the space that is timely because countries are not always friendly to the U.S. have long cherished ambitions to stop and even destroy American satellites. These countries have invested, resources and talent to get their space tech.

As soon as 2019, Americans can begin to see the AMERICAN investments and results. Finally, financial support can be in the billions.

There were also a lot of news about the White House and the creation of a new armed service branch, also called the “Space Force.” Both the creation of a new command, and a “strength” will be a long process and something to watch for in the coming year.

Fortunately, a lot of teams in the military have already made great strides with the space. In particular, the USAF, which has still made remarkable breakthroughs with applications here on Earth and in space.

Are we ready for the rise of the machines’?

In 2018, the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) announced more than $2 billion of investment in new and existing artificial intelligence (AI) programs.

ARMY SETS SIGHTS ON BIGGER, BOLDER, HARDER HITTING BULLETS

Called the ‘AI ‘ Next’ campaign, the coming years will lead to a series of revolutions in the third wave of AI. Machines able to adjust to changing situations – and that is just the beginning.

DARPA will create an array of powerful capabilities for the U.S. army to the protection of the country and an improvement of the military effectiveness.

For example, DARPA will advance about 60 current promising programs such as real-time cyber attack-dynamic kill-chains for all-domain warfare, the human language tech and multi-modality automatic target recognition.

To support the health and well-being of the AMERICAN troops and citizens, there are also AI programs related to medical advances and the use of prosthetic limbs.

Some AI-tech has already proven useful for a wide range of missions from cyber attack warning to the space-based images analysis, so that this AI will also advance.

In addition, the powerful tool of machine learning for AI and other tools such as AI for facial recognition and AI for self-driving vehicles, DARPA creating breakthroughs in a whole new generation of AI.

It will be fascinating to see is that the AI breakthroughs of 2019. The nation has always been able to count on DARPA to ensure U.S. technology outstrips opponents. Many hostile actors are aggressively pushing their AI programs, but fortunately, the country has DARPA to exceed their skills and help keep the country safe.
