Texas police officer in ‘fight of his life’ after shootout; 1 suspect killed, 2 held, police say

A police officer in Fort Worth, Texas, was “in very serious condition” after a shootout with robbery suspects early Friday, police said.

A Texas police officer was in the “fight of his life” after critically injured in a shootout with three suspects robbery in Fort Worth early Friday, authorities said.

The undercover agent was rushed to a hospital by the police vehicle as his fellow officers worked to keep him alive, Forth Worth police chief Joel Fitzgerald said. The police tweeted the officer was “courageously fighting”, as he remained in ICU in critical condition.”

“One of our heroes was put down tonight and we pray for him,” Fitzgerald said.

Our Officer who was shot is currently in the INTENSIVE care unit in a critical condition. He has family, and fellow Officers with him.

Fort Worth Mayor Betsy Price said the officer was in the “fight of his life” and asked citizens to pray for him, his family and his fellow officers.

The officer was shot and killed while attempting to stop the suspects who tried to rob a bar at gunpoint, while the patrons were still inside, the police chief Joel Fitzgerald said. One suspect was killed in the scene when the police returned fire, and two others were taken into custody.

Sgt. Chris Britt said a team of at least 10 officers were conducting surveillance on the three suspects on Thursday evening. The trio was believed to be responsible for a series of robberies in the Fort Worth area, he said.

The team followed the suspects, a bar, which she tried to rob at gunpoint, police said. When police confronted the suspect, at least one suspect fired and hit the undercover agent.

Officers returned fire, killing a male suspect believed to have been shot. It was unclear how many shots had been fired. No customers in the bar were injured.

A female suspect was arrested at the scene, while a second male suspect ran away. Officers later found and arrested the man, police said.

The officials said the suspects were being investigated for at least 15 robberies in Fort Worth, adding that more may have occurred outside the city.
