Less than two months after the justice Department launched a broad antitrust review of large tech companies, 50 U.S. States and territories, led by Texas, on Monday announced its own investigation into Google’s “potential monopolistic behavior.”
The announcement, followed by a separate group of countries, on Friday announced that an investigation into Facebook, the market-dominance. The two probes expand the antitrust scrutiny of big tech companies outside the sweep of Federal and congressional investigations and enforcement actions by the European Supervisory authorities.
A Central theme in the States’ probe into whether Google abuses its market dominant position in online search, advertising and mobile operating systems to unfairly leverage in other markets, stifles innovation, and harm consumers. Although anti-conservative bias documented under Google’s guidance, and frequently draws the wrath of the top Republicans, the anti-trust probes relate specifically to those concerns.
