Texas hospital explosion, collapse reported in the midst of building expansion

An explosion and partial building collapse were reported at Coryell Memorial Healthcare system in Gatesville, Texas, on Monday afternoon.

Emergency workers respond to a hospital in Gatesville, Texas, on Tuesday following reports of an explosion and a part of the building collapse.

The explosion took place at a construction site of Coryell Memorial Healthcare, according to KWTX. The fire department responded to the incident around 2:30 a.m. local time.

A hospital spokesperson confirmed the news station that there were injuries, but not with specific numbers. She said that she was not told of all deaths.

Hospital patients were evacuated from the building and two nearby nursing homes.

Reports of a partial building collapse spread online, but the extent of the damage was not immediately clear.

Witnesses said that the explosion occurred when a generator exploded in a room of the hospital, which is still under construction for expansion.

The Texas-New Mexico Power Company said the explosion knocked out power for a large part of the city.
