A Texas deputy, died on Tuesday after exchanging gunfire with a suspect on the run in a traffic stop, police say.

The problem with the Panola County officer, who has not yet publicly identified, was found around 2 a.m. outside of the Walls, according to Panola County Sheriff Kevin Lake.

In a press release, said the deputy pulled over an SUV when the driver suddenly exited the vehicle and fired a weapon at the deputy.”

The deputy returned fire and the suspect fled the scene.

“Area residents who heard the gunshots, and found the wounded deputy, and cried out for help,” Lake added. “The deputy was transported to an area hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.”

The Award was taken into custody on Tuesday, after the fatal shooting of a Panola County deputy.

The suspect, identified by police as Gregory Newson, of Shreveport, La., it was caught in his hometown in about 3 hours for the Police to say that he will be extradited back to Texas.

“We appreciate the support of the people that came out to help with the replacement, and for those of you who called in with valuable information that helped the authorities trace this suspect,” said. “Our hearts are hurting, and we ask the community to keep track of all of our members and to the family of the fallen officer in your thoughts and prayers.”

Panola County Deputy Chief John Depresca, told KLSA is that of the fallen officer, an eight-year veteran of the department fired a semi-automatic rifle. The station reported that he was hit six times.

Bakersfield Police department spokeswoman Mary-Curtis, told KSLA that the Award was to have been spotted traveling in a vehicle crash and roll. He was reportedly taken into custody after a foot chase and bitten by a K-9.

As of noon Tuesday, the Award was made in morgan city and County Jails. His bond has not been set yet.
