Artificial intelligence and machine learning help us in countless ways. Bots such as Alexa and Cortana can read the news on cue; a Tesla Model S can park itself in your garage.

But, as with other emerging technologies designed to help humanity, it is not uncommon for criminals and hackers to misuse the innovations and inflict major damage.

The last exploit? They are called deepfakes, and they spread like wildfire.

The term is a combination of “deep learning” and “fake” — deepfakes rely on artificial intelligence and machine learning. Programmers make use of existing videos and images of celebrities, public figures, or anyone who they know to be on top of the source images in a pornographic movie.

The movies look ultra-realistic. A Hollywood star can ” see ” in an adult film and you might not realize it, it was all created by a bot. Is used for revenge porn, a programmer can insert a ex-girlfriend or boyfriend in a porn movie, and share it on social media.

“This is very dangerous for a celebrity, because the technology is so good that almost all of the viewers that the video they were watching is the real feature which emotions they feel at that celebrity,” Lou Dennig, an Emmy-winning movie producer, told Fox News.

AI expert Alex Nachlas said deepfakes are not difficult to program and the source code is freely available. Recently, sites like Reddit and Twitter are banned. Nachlas says there is usually a neural network that scans hundreds or thousands of source images. And, he says deepfakes are now possible as a result of increased computing power.

“It is inevitable that the consumer applications will appear on the Apple Store and Google Play in the near future, the offering of video-change by means of neural networks for consumer entertainment,” said AI expert Pavel Cherkashin, managing partner at GVA Capital. Indeed, there is software available that allows people to ‘swap’ faces in videos.

Darren Campo, a New York University adjunct professor at the Stern School of Business, said deepfakes could even be made on the basis of a couple of Instagram Stories. Ultimately, he says, they are “completely fake” and re-create the entire body of an actor or an ex for an adult film.

The technology behind deepfakes, however, can also be used for less dubious purposes.

Nachlas said deepfake technology could help Hollywood film-makers recreate classic scenes in movies, making new movies that have a license for the image of the long-dead stars, and even as a way to improve from an amateur video. The technology can also be used to help people cope with the loss of loved ones.

Joshua Watson, who runs the tech company IronRock Solutions, told Fox News that deepfakes prove that the AI is advancing quickly, even if the concept is currently being abused.

“Maybe one day it can even be used to help a grieving loved one to say goodbye to a face they recognize, or even to help people with Alzheimer’s disease interacting with a younger face they can remember,” he said.

For now, a ban on deepfakes ─ mainly as an instrument for revenge porn may be the only recourse. And, we will begin to hear about new rules and laws. Hopefully programmers will find positive uses for the AI and machine learning before that happens.
