The harvest of Conferenceperen, the most popular peer among Flemish growers, Thursday started. After several tests on the fruit, the Flemish Centre for the Conservation of horticultural Products (VCBT), recently that Conferenceperen the best to be picked between 16 August and 31 August.

For apples to begin the harvest later, and varies also from species to species, but for the Jonagold will that the first half of september. Because of the many sunshine of the past few weeks and months are the apples and pears may be slightly smaller, but they will be also sweeter. “From the tests showed that they contain sugar, and that is all thanks to the sunshine, “says Farmers’ union adviser Pieter Timmermans.

The intent of the opinion of the VCBT is to make sure that the fruit for as long as possible saves. “That advice is usually reasonably well followed, although there is sometimes even after picked,” says Timmermans.

By the hot and dry summer, harvest is also slightly lower than the average of the past five years. It is expected that for pears 6 pct will be less, and for apples 5 pct less. This is reported by the Farmers ‘ union last week.

The Belgian perenoogst is currently estimated at 317 million kg. At the beginning of July was already a first estimate, drawn up on the basis of a survey of 200 Belgian orchard operations, but by the summer weather had that first number has already been adjusted, with more than 10 pct.

For the apples, the harvest of 216 million kg estimated, but there is still no update happened because the harvest only a few weeks to start. Conferenceperen thrive just fine in an average Belgian summer, but are not as resistant to the hot temperatures of the past few weeks.

“That’s why they so something smaller will be’, says Timmermans. “The price of the fruit is on the moment still difficult to assess. The prices for some of the former perenvariëteiten are certainly encouraging.”
