Summary Robert Mapplethorpe in Kunsthal
The Kunsthal in Rotterdam presents from april 22, a large survey of the work of the American photographer Robert Mapplethorpe. He is considered one of the most influential photographers of the last century.
The exhibition includes over two hundred photographic works of Mapplethorpe (1946-1989), such as portraits, self-portraits, nudes and still lifes.
His homo-erotic pictures were explicit, and therefore controversial. Mapplethorpe’s photography is often described as fearless, intriguing, and perfectionistic.
The overview of his work is composed by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the J. Paul Getty Museum in collaboration with the Robert Mapplethorpe Foundation. The Rotterdam Kunsthal is the only European art institution where the retrospective will be on view.
