Sugars in fruits are no healthier than sugars in sweets, what’s the difference?

Sugars in fruits are no healthier than the sugars in sweets. Professors, Hanno pijl and Fred thomas ‘ hospital to help with this persistent misunderstanding is like to be in the world.

Sugar has many different names. Glucose, fructose, lactose, sucrose, dextrose, maltose are the most commonly used names. “The body does not distinguish between the natural sugars found in fruit – fructose, or added sugars,” says Hanno Pijl, physician, and professor of diabetology at the university of Leiden Universitair Medisch Centrum (LUMC). “Sugar is sugar.”

All of the sugars will be the body in the same way. It is converted into glucose and then energy. All sugars contain about the same amount of calories. Honey and fruitstroop have slightly fewer calories, because they contain water.

The Fruit contains more than a sugar alone

“A major advantage of the real juice is, of course, that is the fruit of a lot of other substances that are known to be healthy,” says Fred Brouns, professor emeritus of Innovation in the Healthy Food at the University of Maastricht in the netherlands. “For example, high in fiber, potassium, magnesium, and vitamins.”

That makes it an orange, which may have the same amount of sugar and calories as a piece of chocolate, it’s natural and a much healthier choice.

The banana contains five sugar cubes

How much sugar is there in fruit? Here are some examples: an orange, it contains, depending on the size, about 8 grams of sugar in an apple is 14 grams, and a cup (100 g) strawberries or raspberries 5 grams, and a banana and about 20 ounces. On the website of the Dutch Diabetes Fund, which is a comprehensive list to be found.

As a comparison, a can of cola has about 33 grams of sugar. It has been more than eight sugar cubes. A pack of orange juice contains five, and a granola bar or a slice of cake two, with a caramel waffle, and three with a pink or a cake, but a total of five pieces.

The meaning of a sugar-free, low-sugar and no-added-sugar.

  • Low in sugar: the sugar content of the product is not more than 5 grams of salt per 100 grams, or 2.5 grams per 100 ml.
  • Sugar free: the sugar content of the product is not more than 0,5 grams per 100 grams, or 0.5 grams per 100 ml.
  • No added sugar: the product has no sugar or sweeteners added to it. It doesn’t necessarily mean that there is no sugar in it.

WHO can give advice about the amount of sugar

The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that women have every day, not more than 50 grams of added sugars to consume. This is equivalent to twelve of sugar. The recommendation for men is up to 60 grams, or a fifteen of sugar cubes.

The “guidelines on free, added sugar,” says Brouns. “Real juice counts, therefore, is not with them. This does not apply to fresh-squeezed juice. They are, however, among the free sugars are joined.”

Drink half a litre of freshly squeezed juice, you quickly reach the 50 grams of sugar per day, respectively. Therefore, it is advised to use no more than 150 ml of the drink, which is equivalent to the juice of the two oranges.
