Steve Mnuchin’s father pays record $91M for stainless-steel “Rabbit” sculpture by Jeff Koons

A three-foot stainless steel rabbit holding a carrot reportedly sold at a record of $91.07 million at Christie’s auction house in New York on Wednesday.

The work was bought by the art dealer Robert Mnuchin, the father of the Minister of finance Steve Mnuchin.

The 1986 Jeff Koons sculpture, known simply as “the Rabbit,” is one of the four in the world and was formerly the property of the former Condé Nast owner S. I. Newhouse.

“Rabbit” now has the record for the most expensive work of art created by a contemporary artist.

The curator of a recent Koons retrospective at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, called “Rabbit” one of the most famous works of the past 40 to 50 years, according to Artistic.

Koons became famous in the 1980s in the run of everyday objects – such as balloon animals in the art.

In 2013, Koons sold “Balloon Dog (Orange)” for $ 58.4 million.
