Famous theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking dies.

The famous British scientist Stephen Hawking, who was laid to rest Saturday during a private funeral in Cambridge attended by approximately 500 people.

Redmayne was also scheduled to give a lecture from the Preacher during the service, which was closed to the media. A lecture by the Royal Astronomer Martin Reese, and eulogies by Robert Hawking, the scientist, the eldest son, and former student, Fay Dowker were planned.

Hawking, who died on March 14, at the age of 76 in his Cambridge home. The bell at the church, known locally as Great St. Mary’s, called 76 times as the funeral procession drove to the church.

Hawking the coffin was carried by six bearers of Caius College, where the scientist was a colleague for more than 50 years.

Hawking, who suffered from motor neuron disease, was well known for his groundbreaking research into black holes and other phenomena. His ashes were scheduled to be buried next to Sir Isaac Newton’s tomb is in Westminster Abbey in June. Newton died in 1727.
