Stekelenburg tentative second choice at Everton
Maarten Stekelenburg should for the time being satisfy with a place on the bench for Everton. Coach Ronald Koeman gives Wednesday’s league game at Stoke City, the preferred Joel Robles in goal.
Stekelenburg touched on december 19, injuring his thigh during the stadsderby against Liverpool. The 34-year-old goalkeeper of the Dutch national team is now again restored, but needs some patience.
Since the 26-year-old Robles in goal will do Everton good, said Koeman on Monday at the press conference.
“Often, We have the zero held and the most contests won. It is now difficult for Maarten, but that is football. He will likely have to wait.”
The coach would not say whether the Spaniard Robles, the competition now has definitively won. “It is not fair to now speak of a first or second goalkeeper, but I see no reason to change anything.”
If Stekelenburg are permanently lost, then there will almost certainly be consequences for his place under the bar in Orange. Since his transfer to Everton is the old-following his departure to chelsea the first keeper of the Dutch national team.
He took the position over from Jasper Cillessen, who, after his move from Ajax to FC Barcelona not starting in his club.
