Marrit Steenbergen does later this month at the world CHAMPIONSHIPS in Budapest. The 17-year-old swimmer is not fit enough for participation. Femke Heemskerk is swimming in the Hungarian capital individually, only the 200 metres freestyle.
“Marrit has a tough year. It was a senior year for her and recently she still has the youth european CHAMPIONSHIPS swum in Netanya. She is now not wedstrijdfit”, explained national coach Marcel Wouda Thursday at a press conference in Eindhoven.
The deregistration of Steenbergen in the more striking because they are a few days ago in the youth european CHAMPIONSHIP title picked up in the 100 metres freestyle and won a silver medal on the 4×100 meters free. According to Wouda has the deregistration of the talented Steenbergen, who last year in Rio de Janeiro, her olympic debut, nothing to do with any shoulder pain.
“By the busy years, the battery is simply empty. Marrit can therefore not charging, also a WK. That is her own decision and we support her.”

Heemskerk reported on Tuesday that they are only the 200 metres and the relay team will swim. The 100 metres, let them shoot. The 29-year-old South Holland is on the way back after Rio for her ended in a disappointment. About her performance in the 200 metres, she is now quite satisfied, but she notes that it is still too heavy to go that distance at the world CHAMPIONSHIPS to combine with the 100 metres.
On the 4×100 meter is Heemskerk with the estafetteploeg normally running for a medal. Kromowidjojo and openwaterzwemmers Sharon van Rouwendaal and Ferry Weertman in Budapest individually go for medals at their home race, but Wouda don’t want to aim to pronounce as the medals go.
Last year in Rio performed the Netherlands is very disappointing in the pool, there was no medal to get caught.
“When it became clear how the Dutch swimming, the international community stands for,” said Wouda. “In the international field since then not much has changed, so we go with a very modest mission to Budapest”
