South Carolina shoplifting suspect dies after chase, wreck

COLUMBIA, S. C. – A shoplifting suspect has died after an accident after a chase through a South Carolina sheriff’s deputy.

Highway Patrol Cpl. Bill Rhyne told the news outlets the wreck happened Monday around noon on Interstate 20 in Richland County.

Researchers say that the front-seat passenger in a pickup truck who ran from a sheriff’s deputy died after the driver crashed into a fence, sending one of the posts by the windshield. Rhyne said the man was taken to a hospital where he died. His name was not immediately released.

The pickup driver, Calvin Garrett Liabastre, is charged with the crime of driving under the influence involving death. It was not known whether he has a lawyer.

The chase came after employees of a home improvement store saw the suspects try to steal it.
