What is an irritable bowel anyway?

“Some of the people are frequently suffering from stomach problems and with a movement of the bowels. Symptoms are often abdominal pain, a swollen abdomen, severe abdominal cramps and varying stool: diarrhea, to constipation and flatulence.”

“Symptoms are variable in severity, are sometimes, but not always, and not for anyone else. If, after examination, a medical certificate is not found for the symptoms is called irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). The word syndrome is a group of symptoms that often occur at the same time.”

What is the cause?”

“It is not yet clear. Of the brain appear to be especially alert to the stimuli in the body. For some people, the lure of certain stimuli, with symptoms of: hustle and bustle, stresses and strains, for example.”

“Increasingly, it appears the type of power supply also have a role to play in it.”
He’s Pale, gps

“It used to be said that I always tell patients that it’s annoying, but not dangerous, and that it was the stress, or the stress is that it is good for oneself to keep healthy was to eat, and the toilet had to postpone. But it is becoming more apparent in the type of food also has an important role to play in it.”

What is the role then?

“Some people will break down in the intestines, some sugars are wrong, or too much. Because they are not fully broken down in the small intestine, enter the large intestine. It is due to bacteria is broken, they are fermented, and the dust and gases that are released to stimulate and then to the intestines, which causes a IBS symptoms going to get.”

Take good care of irritable bowel

  • Drink plenty of fluids (at least 1.5 litres of water per day)
  • Eat plenty of fiber
  • To move a lot of
  • To avoid the stress
  • An important part of your diet, and follow the FODMAP diet to find out if there are any foods that it is better to avoid it or not eat it

For some sugars, is it?

“That will be able to have different types of sugars are: disaccharides, or polysaccharides, for example. They’re in the ‘normal’ and ‘healthy’ products such as vegetables, fruits, and nuts. So it was with a patient of mine found out that her intestines do not respond well to certain polysaccharides in the period of time, in spite of the fact that apples are among the healthy food you hear. Since they do not have raw apples to eat, she doesn’t have her stomach.”

This means IBS that you are allergic to it?

“No, no, an allergy is something different, it is the body’s antibodies. In the PDS, no antibodies will be created, but they react in the intestines to substances in the fermentation of the sugars to be released. We would therefore like to express a sensitivity, not allergy.”

How can you find out which ingredient you are sensitive to?

“A lot of people report great results with the FODMAP diet. This is a temporary strict diet, that will give you a couple of weeks, several different types of sachariden to leave out, and then it’s going to eat it. This is how to find out if and to which specific sugars are sensitive.”

“It is a so-called elimination diet, have all the potential klachtenveroorzakers way, and a test per week for a single kind of a saccharide, by which, add to it. This way, you can figure out which of the substances is the ones in the wrong are. If you do that, then you have less or do not eat, your symptoms are a lot less able to be.”

Where can I find more information on the FODMAP diet?

“Teens with chronic and life there is good information on this subject. Also, on the website of the Nutrition centre (voedingscentrum), you can contact us for information. You can use the FODMAP diet, do it yourself, but sometimes it’s quite complicated, consult with a dietician. You can usually have a reference, but ask to be sure check with your health care provider.”
