Skippers may for the third time in a row European athlete of the year
Dafne Schippers has a chance to for the third time in a row to be voted the European female athlete of the year. The 24-year-old Utrecht belongs to the ten candidates proposed by the European athletics federation on Monday announced.
Schippers won the so-called Golden Track over the past two years. The winner of european CHAMPIONSHIPS-gold in the 100 metres and olympic silver in the 200 metres in Rio de Janeiro has competition from, among other Nafissatou Thiam.
The 22-year-old Belgian captured the olympic title in the decathlon. The Polish Anita Wlodarczyk is also a prominent candidate, because she is in Rio with a world record gold picked up in the kogelslingeren.
Fans, journalists, members of the European athletics federation and a panel of atletiekexperts can all vote. The results from each group counting for a quarter when determining the winners.
The European athletes of the year will be on October 15, announced during a gala in the Portuguese, Funchal.
