After the fake olive oil, now also the sjoemelhoning. It was already known that a lot of honey do not meet the European rules, but the problem seems to be now even bigger than thought.
Last year it came to light that 19 to 32 % of the honey within the European Union is sold, does not meet the European rules. It went to (aanlenging with cheap sugar products that are sold as honey, an mistaken analysis of the pollen, a wrong herkomstvermelding, foreign processing methods or unproven health claims on the label.
New figures now suspect that the problem is even greater. In six years, took over the export of honey according to honingexpert Norberto Garcia across the world with 61 %, while the number of hives in the same period, with only 8 % increased. In ‘eastern’ regions of Ukraine to Taiwan – is that contrast even more acute: there were 13 % more hives, but increased exports by a whopping 196 %.
The biggest victims are not only the consumers, but also producers. Garcia argued at the 21st congress of the Union Nationale de l ” Apiculture Française (UNAF) that sjoemelhoning a greater problem for the sector than pesticides and bee mortality. (EK)
