Sjinkie Knegt Thursday of severe burns sustained while lighting the wood stove in his home in the Frisian Bantega. The 29-year-old shorttracker is taken by ambulance to the hospital in Groningen.
When lighting the stove, grasp the clothes of Knegt flame. His wife found him in the living room, and alarmed the emergency services, and the trauma helicopter and ambulance was quickly on the spot.
Knegt ran in the incident third degree burns. The injuries sit on various places of his body, but his left leg is seriously injured. It is not yet known how long his recovery will take.
Coach Jeroen Otter, the Dutch shorttrackploeg Thursday, informed of the misfortune of Knegt. Friday starts in Dordrecht and the european CHAMPIONSHIPS, where Knegt is anyway not going to do it.

Knegt picked up in February 2018 olympic silver

In addition to his two olympic medals and three European titles (2012, 2015 and 2018), Knegt also a world title to his name. In november at the world cup in the Us Salt Lake City won Knegt gold in the 1,500 metres. Last month in the Kazakh Almaty, he picked up silver in the 1,000 meters.
