A corrections officer was killed and another jail worker were injured Sunday after they were attacked by an inmate in a south Arkansas county jail, authorities said.
The attack happened on Sunday afternoon at the Miller County jail in Texarkana, on the state of the border with Texas. The Miller County Sheriff’s Office said correctional officer Lisa Mauldin, 47, died in a hospital as a result of her injuries, and another officer, Demaris Allen, was injured and taken to a hospital in Little Rock.
The attack occurred at 1 hour in the kitchen, KTSV reported, though the government officials did not immediately say what prompted the incident.
Authorities say the prison is now secure and on lockdown.
The inmate, who was not injured during the altercation, was not immediately identified.
A statement from the prison officials obtained by Arkansas Online asked for “prayers for the families of these correction officers and for the agency as we mourn the loss of one of our own.”
