Five years ago, broke Karin Dreijer of her husband. The singer of the now defunct The Knife then began a journey of discovery to herself and to her sexual orientation, which resulted in a Plunge, her second album under the name Fever Ray, and a true coming-outalbum.

The teasers and video clips are often chock full of references to lgbt and bdsm and the lyrics to Plunge his equally little veiled. ‘Wanna do it? If we do it, it’s my way”, sounds the in Wanna Sip. And To the Moon and Back ends with the words: “I want to run my fingers up your pussy’.

‘Plunge is not about separation – it really is not a sad album -, but the phase that followed: that of the regained freedom and the energy released. Since the separation I imagine it is quite, er, curious, ” says Dreijer about it in an exclusive interview with Knack Focus that appears this week.

More than getting married

‘The record departs in some sense from my own body, and how to re-find the control to get. What turns me on? What do I mean exactly when I talk about sex I have? What is sex really? Those things I wanted to discover.’ There was an account on Tinder: ‘My identity, I kept secret. And that is really not that difficult for someone who has been all her life behind a mask on a podium.’

Dreijer talk about the clip of To The Moon And Back, in which a party ends in a golden shower, golden showers. “But rather cute. You can clearly see that the characters have lots of fun.’

‘Within bdsm to be very clear arrangements made. You agree in advance what will happen, and you can always stop. That structure of mutual consent, we can learn a lot from it, ” she explains. “I think it’s important to have that kind of things debatable and fun to make. For me, it is about sex talk is something very political. Everyone has the right to his own choices.’

The sexual education in this area is still much better, Dreijer. “If the kids at school about sex to learn, is it always one-sided about heteronormativiteit, reproduction, how to get a baby. And if the neoliberalen about equal rights for lesbian, gay, bisexual speak, than they are about their right to marry. But there is so much more than that?”
