Serbian ruling party chooses the prime minister Vucic as a presidential candidate
The ruling Serbian Vooruitgangspartij (SNS) has decided that the current Serbian prime minister Aleksandar Vucic to nominate as a presidential candidate in the elections this spring, will take place.
“It was unanimous. It is Vucic”, said minister of Home Affairs and Vucic ally Nabojsa Stefanovic, after a meeting of the leadership of the party.
The exact date for the elections is not yet chosen, but the expectation is that they will, in april take place. The candidate from the SNS will compete against a fragmented and mutually conflicting opposition.
The elections are seen as a key test for Vucic, who is pro-EU. He has, with the support of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) sweeping economic reforms introduced in the 7.3 million inhabitants storey Serbia.
The SNS says that with the decision Vucic to nonimeren the support in the current president, Tomislav Nikolic. He is a former ultra-nationalist, who in 2012 was elected.
