‘Senescent cells cause ageing, and the problems with cancer

In the Netherlands there are currently DuSRA-THERE it is-the study, the greatest co-operation of experts from research and industry in the field of aging. One of the researchers, dr. Peter Kaiser. He is doing research on the way in which the so-called senescent cells, aging, and problems with cancer.

What are senescent cells?

“Out-of-date and damaged cells. The cells remain metabolic active, but not any more. Through life, our body, damage them.”

“It’s like rust to a car. As soon as there is a roestplek is created, it will be gradually greater and greater. This is very similar to the cells in our body. The damage to the cells is usually restored by the repair proteins. However, not all the damage is repaired, the recovery is not always complete.”

“At the time, so there are more cells that do not fully recover. If a cell is not a good deal, he may be senescent to become.”

Is there a link between age-related diseases, and the presence of senescent cells?

“Yes you can. A person of the 65 a lot of age-related diseases, has had more senescent cells in the body is an age that is healthy is one. They show, in other words, the biological age is.”

How to create senescent cells that damage is it?

“These substances are being SASP proteins, called senescence-associated secretory phenotype. Also the SASP proteins, with the amount of time in the body, and the hunting of such age-related diseases to it. Think of it as sand in an engine, they are a kind of noise in the system. Continue to be able to senescent cells with an incorrect movement, itself of cancer cells.”

Aging can be delayed or rolled back will be when the senescent cells are removed?

“That’s why we do research. Other verouderingsonderzoekers are working on it. Research with mice has shown that up to 25% longer life, when the senescent cells are removed. And, more importantly, they have to stay healthy for longer.”

“We have to do some research into senescent cells and for the treatment of cancer. Chemotherapy causes damage to cells. One of our latest discoveries is the fact that the cancerous cells that the chemotherapy will survive, many of senescence proteins in mind.”

“Which proteins in the cancer cells are again more resistant to chemotherapy or radiation therapy. If that happens, you end up as a patient of the rain and into the fire. Our cancer research is focused, mainly, on the breaking out of the negative feedbackloop.”

Have you ever found a solution?

“We have found that the combination of the two types of protein in senescent cells that are stuck together, FOXO4, and TP53. We also have a fabric will be developed in which we used the proteins from each other to be able to draw. This is specific to the senescent cells to kill them. We do not include them, as it were, to commit suicide.”

Research in the laboratory and in mice has been very promising. Now, we want to make this substances, thus enhancing that, and we also allow patients to test them, to see if we would be able to prevent the tumors become resistant to treatment, as we are in the senescent cells, killing.”

The good news for cancer patients?

“I don’t want to be asked to applaud. There are a lot of different types of cancer, and a lot of different types of proteins, which play an important role. Not all of the tumorsoorten plays, senescence also has a role. Also, we’re going to continue to find out.”

“In two years we will know more, I guess. We hope the clinical trials begin. But before the start of the treatment and can be used even if years later. There is a lot of research in advance.”

Will there ever be a drug for age-related diseases?

“I’m sure of it. The best thing would be if we are exactly in the map below to find out which type of senescence, in which disease occurs. On this basis, we have specific resources for the individual ouderdomsaandoeningen to work to develop them.”

“The discovery of different subtypes of senescence, and the creation of unique chemicals against it has been a major focus of our lab. Along with, for example, have direct counterparts in the ERIBA, Groningen and we hope that really something to be able to do it against a variety of age-related diseases. So far, it is not possible right now. But in ten years ‘ time, things are going to happen.”

Can we do something to get senescent cells to continue?

“A healthy lifestyle. And most of all: don’t eat too much, and you have the muscle mass to maintain by working out. Movement that helps anti-aging. From bloedsamples of zeventigjarigen who are in the early stages of obesity and diabetes, were found not only that the movement of the blood sugar level did drop, but it is also the number of senescent cells gradually decreased.”

“The body can make cells, therefore, himself by exercise, and exercise is good for you in doing so. So, off you go, out of the bank now!”
