MINISTER OF DEFENSE-NOMINATED ESPER GRILLED OVER CONTRACTOR RELATIONSHIPS IN HEATED CONFIRMATION HEARING
Committee Chairman Jim Inhofe, R-Okla., said earlier this week that a final confirmation vote for Esper at the latest, next Tuesday would take place.
Esper hearing before the Committee featured a tense exchange with Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., who challenged Esper refusal to fully recuse themselves from any and all matters relating to Raytheon, the defense contractor, for which he served as a lobbyist prior to joining the government. Esper said that ethics staff told him to recuse himself.
Earlier in the hearing, he said he was “fully committed to live up to my ethical obligations.”
In a statement on Thursday, Senate majority Leader Mitch McConnell, praised Esper as “a man of honor and integrity for the nation and is committed to the men and women who serve in uniform.” He also said, “I urge my colleagues, with me in the support of his confirmation, as soon as you can reach the ground.”
If confirmed, Esper, the first permanent Minister of defense since James Mattis would be joined to the end of 2018. Shanahan, who filled the role on an interim basis then, was considered for the permanent position, but reportedly withdrew due to a 2010 domestic incident, he wanted to be not brought, during the confirmation process.
