HAVELOCK, N. C. – Authorities say they have stopped their search for a sailor who fell overboard from a Navy cruiser off the coast of North Carolina.
Marine officials said in a news release that the Fire Controlman 2nd Class Christopher Clavin was the guided missile cruiser USS Normandy on Tuesday afternoon about 80 miles (130 kilometers) from the sea.
The authorities say that the Navy and coast guard searched for Clavin for 76 hours until sunset on Friday. At least six ships and a half dozen helicopters and planes helped in the search.
Officials say that the crew of the USS Normandy is planning a memorial service for Clavin.
