Schalke 04-trainer Weinzierl praises Huntelaar after European anniversary
Schalke 04-trainer Markus Weinzierl was Thursday night after the Europa League match with PAOK Saloniki (0-3) happy with his striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, who, with his first goal since October 2016 his fiftieth European goal today.
“The goal from Huntelaar was the icing on the cake,” said Weinzierl on the press conference in Greece. “I am very happy for him, after such a long time again a hit.”
The 33-year-old Huntelaar made last week after three and a half months of injuries his comeback for Schalke. The Dutchman fell Thursday against PAOK six minutes before time, and in stoppage time he put the final score on the scoreboard in the heenduel in the sixteenth finals of the Europa League.
“He makes the last time a good impression during the training,” said Weinzierl. “And of course, he’s ice cold in the penalty area. It does me good that right Klaas-Jan de 0-3. He has his chance to get caught in, but ten minutes of playing time.”

Huntelaar is hit in the Toumbastadion in Thessaloniki the sixteenth player ever with at least fifty goals in European competitions. The Achterhoeker had 81 matches for his anniversary.
The 76-fold Orange-international made his first European goal in October of 2004 on behalf of sc Heerenveen in the uitduel with Benfina (4-2 defeat). That was one of his five European goals for the Marbles.
Huntelaar scored also fourteen times for Ajax in the UEFA competitions and now 31 times for Schalke.

The attacker is in particular accurate in the UEFA Cup/Europa League. With his 34 goals, he is second on the eternal topscorerslijst of the second European tournament, behind former Feyenoord Henrik Larsson (forty goals).
Huntelaar is the second Dutchman with a minimum of fifty goals in Europe. Ruud van Nistelrooij made 62 matches for sc Heerenveen, PSV, Manchester United, Real Madrid and Hamburger SV. Cristiano Ronaldo is first on the list with 98 goals.
