An AMERICAN world War II fighter plane that crashed off the coast of North Wales, and, occasionally, out of the sand that has received a protected status, officials announced Monday.

The Lockheed P-38 Lightning Fighter plane crash-landed in September, 1942, and is buried at 6.6 feet from the sand. The ghostly remains of the plane, but occasionally appear in the sand – that the first sighting was in the 1970s, and, according to Cadw, the Welsh government’s historic environment service. The plane was discovered in 2007 and, most recently, in 2014.

With are scheduled to run, or protection, of the status of the fighter, and was the first legally designated for military aircraft crash site, which is protected for its historical and archaeological importance in the united kingdom

The fighter, which was driven by a 24-year-old Second Lieutenant. Robert F. Elliott, a crash landing after running into trouble during a gunnery practice mission. She walked away from the crash, but was reported missing in action in just a few short months later.

She’s a cousin, Robert Elliott, was a native of Kingsport, Tennessee. and a U.S. Navy veteran, said he was very pleased with the airplane’s protected status.

“I am honored and delighted that Cadw has granted its official recognition of my uncle, P38F, if a scheduled Ancient Monument,” he said in a statement. “My uncle was one of the people who are brave and skilled pilots, who all served with distinction during the second world WAR. I visited the site with my wife, Cathy, in 2016, it was a very moving and emotional experience.”

A number of the downed aircraft from the second world War, there have emerged in the last couple of years. Earlier this year, it was the wreck of a world War ii B-24 bomber that crashed in the sea off the coast of Bermuda in February 1945, when it was discovered by a team of researchers from the University of Delaware.

The plane is buried under the 6.6 feet in the sand, but rather, as here, it sometimes appears out of the sand.

By 2017, the engineers are working on a sub-sea power link to learn about what is believed to be the wreck of a World War II Royal Air Force bomber off the coast of Norway.

In 2015, the University of Hawaii and NOAA released the incredible video of a U.S. Navy seaplane that sank during the opening moments of the attack on Pearl Harbor.

Last year, it is a very rare world War II Spitfire fighter plane flown by a Royal Air Force pilot, who later took part in the “Great Escape” was re-established on a remote Norwegian town of bergen.
