Russian blogger gets six years in prison in afpersingszaak

A Russian blogger who had a criticism on the authorities, was on Wednesday sentenced to six years in prison, said his lawyer, in a afpersingszaak that critics say are politically motivated.

Alexander Valov, whose blog is critical of the authorities in the Southern Russian city of Sochi, was earlier this year indicted for the extorting of money from parliamentarian Yuri Napso.

Valov was accused of extorting 300,000 ruble (3800 euro) of Napso, reportedly in exchange for the removal of blog posts about a private pool that would be built by the parliamentarian on a municipal beach in the seaside resort on the Black Sea. Valov, the allegations are denied.

Valovs lawyer, Alexander Popkov, said that the defense in the appeal will go against the judgment, which according to him “cruel”.

Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny wrote on Twitter that Valov “simply because the politics is trapped” and that his judgment it hard looked like. “Six years – that’s what you get for a murder,” wrote Navalny.
