Rushemy Botter starts coming up to his last year at the Antwerp fashion academy. The Dutchman is without doubt a beautiful future for the well-known modeplatform VFILES selected his collection out of hundreds of entries and invited him to to show his collection at New York Fashion Week. For a Botter, it was a dream that became reality. “New York Fashion Week has a lot of doors opened.”

How do you have your first New York Fashion Week experience?

Botter: “It was really great and everything went very well. When I did my first show did at the academy, I thought that nothing could go wrong, but there were a number of things wrong. For the presentation at New York Fashion Week, I went a lot more mindful to work and everything is run smoothly. We were also constantly with the show busy. Every day we went at 10am in the morning to the studio to pass to 23h in the evening back to the hotel. It was a lot of hard work but at the same time also enjoy.”

You were accompanied by Naomi Campbell, Jerry Lorenzo, Young Thug & Mel Ottenberg, stylist to Rihanna. How was that collaboration?

Botter: “They came down, and far along in the studio to talk about the collection and to give tips on the subject. With Jerry Lorenzo, the man behind ‘Fear of God’, clicked it right away. It was as if I were with a friend, spoke. My encounter with Naomi Campbell was more of a business and what is superficial, but it was nice to meet her. Mel Ottenberg has me also quite a few tips given about how it is there in the box itself.

They expect that I’ll go to break but that is, of course, have to wait and see

Young Thug I have until the last day to get to know, and that was also a very pleasant experience since he is one of my big idols is both modevlak as on a musical level.”

How was the feedback on your collection?

Botter: “very very good. Everyone was full of praise. They were also enthusiastic about the way I think and how I concepts translate into clothing. They expect that I’ll go to break but that is, of course, have to wait and see.”

Which moment will you remember most?

Botter: “When Young Thug on the catwalk, went to one of the models to the styling.”

What went through you at that moment?

Blunter: “a Lot, I remember me not more of. I was totally in shock. After the show I asked his stylist why he had done that. She told me that he is so his respect wanted to express because he is a garment of my collection could do during that night. It was a very nice gesture and it gave me a lot of press coverage generated.”

How does it feel to be viral?

Botter: “Bizarre. It is a very strange feeling to wake up and realize that half the internet has seen (laughs). It is not a dream but something where I already had thought about it and now it has become a reality.”

You took inspiration from a New Zealand gang called the Mighty Mongrel Mob for your collection. Why exactly is that gang?

Botter: “I have ever seen a documentary about the Mighty Mongrel Mob and their way of thinking intrigued me so I go deeper to dig. They are known as a very violent gang but if you look beyond their image and their appearance, you can see that they have a very big heart. They form a kind of ‘tribe’ and they protect each other is actually against the society of which they are the exact opposite. I have tons of respect for the fact that they are so hard at their own values and standards. If something to me emotionally touches, then I incorporate so often in my clothing. Therefore, I have banners and patches designed with my own values and standards to a kind of ‘tribe’ to create but from my way of thinking.”

Your collection also has an activist aspect. Do you find it important to make a bold statement?

Botter: “I’m beginning not to a collection with that thought, but if you get the chance then you must certainly take advantage of. I am naturally an activist person, so I have that aspect of my personality in the collection processed without that I stopped.”

What fascinates me to you collection is the fact that you’re playing with gender standards. Is genderloze clothing the future according to you?

Botter: “It is in the elevator, I think. I buy all long women’s wear, if I have a vrouwenjas like it, then I will buy that just. Celebrities such as Young Thug and Jaden Smith, who are often women’s wear buy and that are very popular with the youth, can make sure the taboo around genderloze clothing in our society disappears.”

Is Young Thug, therefore, be an inspiration for you? Because he dares to be themselves within the hiphopwereld that a very masculine and tough image?

Botter: “Yes, I think that is. I have always feminine and elegant mannenkledij made and I find it very inspiring that he himself dares to be in that world. Another example is Kanye West. Everyone in the hiphopwereld found it initially odd that he skinny jeans wore, but now is quite normal.”

New York Fashion Week, you can all of your bucket list deleted. What dream would you like to deliver?

Botter: “When I graduate, I want a label to start with my friend who is also a fashion designer. Together with her, I want to conquer the world. I know that really big sound, but I do believe that it is possible. New York Fashion Week is a first big step in the right direction and it has a lot of doors opened.”
