‘Roseanne’ spin-off ‘of The Conners’ rearranged DJ’s wife

Actress Maya Lynne Robinson joins the cast of “The Conners’ as a series regular.

The “Roseanne” spin-off has cast theatre actress Maya Lynne Robinson as a new series regular for the upcoming season, ABC announced Friday.

Robinson will play Geena Williams-Conner, DJ’s (Michael Fishman) wife and Maria’s (Jayden Rey) mother, who returns home from active service overseas in Afghanistan.

The character was introduced in the Nov. 16, 1994, episode of “Roseanne” and was then played by Rae’Ven Larrymore Kelly. On the “Roseanne” reboot “The Mindy Project” actress Xosha Roquemore briefly played the role in the episode, “Go Boy,” and was seen via Skype.

“We are pleased to welcome the incredibly talented Maya Lynne Robinson to the cast this season. Her character, 2nd Lieutenant Geena Conner, who is a younger DJ was reluctant to kiss in the school play, comes full circle as his wife and Mary’s mother, to bring back a small piece of Conner’s history,” showrunner and executive producer Bruce Helford said in a statement.

“And yet, while Geena is not unknown for the family, viewers new and old will enjoy seeing how her ‘military style’ discipline networks with the Conners’ more laid-back attitude.”

Robinson most recently appeared in the theatre productions ofA Streetcar Named Desire” as Stella, and “Runaway Home” Eunice. She has also appeared on the web series “HTMAST, GURLS” and the solo shows, Character “Breakdown” and “Straight A” Student.”

Earlier this week, ABC released the first official photos of “The Conners’, the first episode taping. According to the premiere episode, the title “Keep on Truckin’, ” a sudden turn of events forces the family faced with the daily struggle of life in Lanford in a way they never have before.

Goodman spoke to The Sunday Times in August, where he said that Roseanne Barr’s character to be killed in the spin-off.

“Roseanne” was cancelled in May, after Barr was fired for a racist tweet against Valerie Jarrett, a former senior advisor to Barack Obama.

“It is an unknown,” Goodman said of whether or not the spin-off will be successful, before referring to his beloved character, Then, and what has become of Barr’s character. “I think he will be mopey and sad because his wife is dead.”

Goodman also said that he was not in contact with Barr, but did thank her for clearing the way for “The Conners” to continue with ABC. He also said that he knew for a fact that the 65-year-old Barr was “not racist.”

“They had to sign a paper saying that she relinquished all her rights to the show so we could go,” he said. “I sent her an e-mail and thanked her for. I did not hear anything back, but she went through hell at the time. And she is still going through hell.”

ET spoke with Barr earlier this month, and they tore at goodman’s words of support. “I love him,” Barr said. “So sweet of him to do that, so much fun, because he knows me.”

“The Conners” premieres on Tuesday, Oct. 16 at 8 pm ET/PT on ABC.
