RIVM investigates possible unsafe type of breast implant after French ban

The national Institute for public Health and the Environment (RIVM) is going to do research on a type of breast implant that Thursday is prohibited by the French zorginspectie. The RIVM view or also in the Netherlands there is a reason for intervention.

The French ban is, as yet, a temporary measure of precaution, which was taken after it became clear that women with such an implant, an increased risk of a rare form of cancer walk.

A spokesman of the GOVERNMENT says to that the Dutch Health care Inspectorate and Youth (IGJ) institute on the occasion of the French ban has prompted research to do. In this context, the French data, and other recent scientific findings made available.

It comes to so-called macrogetextureerde breast implants, implants with a rough surface that also in the Netherlands to be used in breast enlargements and reconstructions. By that surface attaches to the implant itself better to the breast tissue and moves less quickly.

Not known how many women conscious implant

It is not known how often the particular type of implant in the Netherlands is used. In France, a majority of an estimated 500,000 women who have a breast augmentation have had a macrogetextureerd implant.
