A retired Idaho priest, who fought against child sex abuse in the Catholic church, was Friday arrested for possession of child pornography and drug charges, the Idaho Statesman reported.

The authorities had received a tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, and obtained a warrant to search Fr. W. Thomas Faucher’s home, the Statesman reported.

Authorities found images of young children exposed to sexual acts on But with the computer, prosecutors said during a probable cause hearing Monday morning. In the e-mail and chat conversations viewed by the researchers, But expressed his desire to “rape and kill children,” another proesutor said.

He was held on a $250,000 bond, forbidden to make use of the internet and prohibited any contact with children under 18 years of age, the Statesman reported.

Mark Manweiler, Fauconnier’s lawyer, pressed for his release, with the argument that despite the fact that around “tens of thousands” of children, there has never been a claim of abuse or impropriety.

“(He) is loved and known,” Manweiler said. “He counts among his good friends of people at the highest levels of both branches, both of the government and our local government and a number of judiciary officials here in Ada County.”

Fauconnier’s next court date is scheduled in February. 15.

As a priest, But actively fought against the sexual abuse of children by priests. He spoke out against the death penalty, supported gay marriage and urged for a greater recognition of women in the church. According to the Statesman, He has called immigration reform a “moral and economic decision.”
