Residents begin cleaning up after the floods in Iowa

DES MOINES, Iowa – Residents in the Des Moines area are cleaning up after deadly floods destroyed houses and cars submerged, and more damage could be revealed as the water draw.

Heavy rainfall over the weekend forced the evacuation of numerous homes and businesses in Des Moines and the surrounding suburbs. Drake university broadcasting 66-year-old Larry Cotlar was killed when he was swept away by floods on Saturday.

Areas in the vicinity of Fourmile Creek at Des Moines, and Walnut Creek in Clive were particularly hard hit.

The Water rushed into the apartments on the ground floor in parts of Des Moines and ruining possessions. Fifty-eight-year-old Ellen James says that they lost everything and had to stay in a shelter Sunday night.

In Clive, dozens of businesses and homes were also ravaged by floodwater.
