Researchers have found an new indicator found for colon cancer. The so-called metabolic syndrome, a stofwisselingsaandoening, may indicate cancer.
Researchers of the Free University of Amsterdam examined the patient records of 263.000 people. 1.292 of them had the diagnosis of colon cancer. With software, the data of the group with and without bowel cancer compared.
The researchers herbevestigden well-known predictors as constipation, age, and iron deficiency and added the metabolic syndrome, as they write in the journal Computers in Biology and Medicine.
“The technique that is used makes, in the long term, on the basis of routine case information in an individual patient with complaints to the office of the doctor, a calculation of the risk. This can help in the decision of the patient whether or not for further investigation”, says professor of family medicine Matthijs Numans in a press release.
