Researchers create high-speed internet lane for when disaster strikes

When disaster strikes, rescuers often rely on the internet to communicate and share crucial information on the task at hand. With that in mind, a group of researchers from the Rochester Institute of Technology a proposal for a method of creating a high-speed lane of online traffic is dedicated to this kind of use.

The team has createda new network protocol to ensure that vital communications reach the intended recipient, according to a report from Science Daily. The Multi-Node Label Routing (MNLR) protocol provides an immediate “failover” mechanism, which means that if there is a link or node — that is not uncommon when the network is stressed — the data is sent via an alternative path immediately.

This protocol can be carried out under the well-established internet protocols, which means that other users ‘ access to the web should not be affected by the deployment.

Earlier this month, the MNLRprotocol was head-to-head with the used Border Gateway Protocol (BGP), with the help of the United States Global Environmental Network for Innovation. It tookthe BGP about 150 seconds to recover from a link failure, while the MNLR protocol was able to do this inless than 30 seconds.

Nirmala Shenoy, a professor at the Rochester Institute of Technology and the principal investigator of the project, writes the problems with the current protocols to their age. They were given a place in a time in which the nature of the information that is transmitted over the internet was very different, and they are not necessarily well suited for the current use.

“The sharing of information on the internet during an emergency is like trying to drive a jet down the street in the rush hour,” says Jennifer Schneider, who served asco-principal investigator in addition to Shenoy. “Much of the critical information is too large and to heavy for the existing internet pipeline.”

In a disaster situation, the emergency services would need to exchange cards, information about the location where the staff will be sent to the mobile phone’s location, data, video and audio calls, and various other information depending on the nature of the event. In view of the fact that such a scenario is likely to prompt a flurry of communication between citizens, the internet-traffic can be incredibly congested.

While the internet is becoming increasingly important in the daily life of all the time, some of the fundamental elements of its operation for many years. Research projects such as these help ensure that the web can continue to grow and evolve in step with our use.
