A lot of people are going to be in the fall and again in search of the pot of fat, and vitamin D. and Why does the vitamin D levels in the winter months? Ten questions to ask epidemiologist and voedingswetenschapper, Hanne van Ballegooijen, that there is research to do.
Where is vitamin D good for?
“Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that is involved in a variety of different physical processes in the body. It is very important for the health of bones and teeth, required for the functioning of the muscles, and encourages the inclusion of, among others, calcium.”
Where can I find it?
“We are a small part of it through the power supply. It is mainly found in animal products such as fatty fish, milk, and a little bit of meat and eggs. It is also added to margarine and baking and frying.”
“For the most part, the amount of vitamin D that we need, we’ll get through the sun.”
Hanne van Ballegooijen, voedingswetenschapper
“But for the most part (about 80 per cent of the amount of vitamin D that we need, then we’ll get inside through the sun. It is made in the skin created by sunlight.”
How is it possible that the vitamin D level is between the months of October and april falls?
“In the winter, the heat of the sun in the uk not to have an adequate supply of vitamin D in the skin to make it. For young persons, which is usually not a problem in the summer months, as we get vitamin D and to save in order to get through the winter.”
“The board of Health recommends that people who are at risk of vitamin D deficiency with vitamin D supplements to take. Current account deficit results in a higher risk of disorders associated with vitamin D deficiency are associated, such as falls and fractures.”
In the dark, at the office and at home: What is it?
To identify groups at risk are you?
“Among others, for the elderly. As we age, the skin becomes less able to make vitamin D from sunlight and to create them. In addition to the elderly, the women, after the menopause, veiling of women, young children, pregnant women, anyone who doesn’t have enough of is people with dark skin. Also, the darker skin may be less vitamin D from sunlight, creating it.”
You put your questions for the purposes of this opinion. Why is that?
“It is the opinion of the board of Health, is based on the assumption that, with the help of vitamin D deficiency, via supplementation and the risk of various diseases are able to reduce.”
“It was a logical assumption, but several large randomised clinical trials in adults, which, over the past few years, globally, have been made, it appears that the supplement of vitamin D, the vitamin D level is, however, opkrikt, but the risk of more bone fractures and heart attacks and not decrease.”
This means that, in the opinion of the board of Health is no longer relevant?
“No, no. Anyway, it’s going to be results at the group level. Vitamin D supplementation for specific conditions is very important. But studies have shown that some groups, particularly older people, there will be less benefit than we originally anticipated.”
How can I do that?
“We don’t know yet, exactly. That’s why we do research. We know, not all of the vitamins off. One of the hypotheses is that vitamin D is the only work in conjunction with other fat-soluble vitamins, and calcium. I’m currently researching the co-operation between the vitamin D and vitamin K. However, there is still a long, long time to learn, for we are there conclusions to be drawn from them.”

It has the extra vitamin D to swallow it, according to you, then do it!
“For some people, it’s the extra vitamin D is necessary. Anyone who has used it on the advice of a doctor or a specialist, need to continue to do so. A severe and prolonged vitamin D deficiency can have unpleasant consequences, such as muscle weakness, fatigue, and pain in the joints and muscles, and should be treated by a doctor.”
“Go out in the winter to hiking, biking, gardening, or outdoor sports and go for a healthy diet.”
Hanne van Ballegooijen, voedingswetenschapper
“In order to answer the question of whether vitamin D is useful, you will need to look at the overall burden of proof, and not just to the work of the last couple of years. From these studies it seems to supplement, especially for older and less beneficial than at first thought. On the other hand, there are hardly any risks are well known, from the daily use of a vitamin D supplement. Currently, there is no need to worry.”
What do we need to do for making the most of our vitamin D levels?
“In order to meet the required 10 micrograms of vitamin D per day, it is wise to have plenty of it to go outside. Go for a walk, bike riding, gardening, or outdoor sports. Even in the winter.”

“In addition to a healthy diet is the basis for this. With many plant-based and unprocessed foods, plenty of dairy, and every week of fatty fish, such as mackerel, salmon and herring.”
It will be the recommendation of the board of Health, in the future, to make a change?
“For now, there is still some of the vitamin D supplementary opinion. But, it is hoped that the board of Health soon to us with more information. I think it’s time that the pile of scientific literature in the last few years, a critical review and guidelines for some of the groups might be revised.”
