You can see the Poe house and Museum on North Amity Street, Baltimore, or Poe’s grave in the Westminster Hall and Burying Ground in the city center visit. For three-quarters of a century, a figure, dressed in a dark trench coat to creep in the cemetery would be after midnight on Poe’s birthday. The mystery man, a half-consumed bottle of cognac and three roses on Poe’s grave would be left. Viewers wanted to watch stones in the positions behind the grave, the dark ritual.
Poe was the master of the macabre. Poe understood, as the precise language on the printed page could petrify a reader lying in its safety of an armchair at home, with a spot of tea.
We do not need Poe to scare us these days. We have a Twitter.
