Record number of boat people died on the Mediterranean Sea in 2016
More than 4,500 boat people have their attempt to through the Mediterranean in the EU to get in 2016 not survived. That is a record, says the director of the European border control agency Frontex, Fabrice Leggeri, Wednesday in Brussels.
He called it a “sad paradox” that there has never been so many ships active in the search for migrants in boats, while the number of dead will never be higher. According Leggeri stop people smugglers from Libya, now an average of 160 people at a time in a boat, compared to 100 a few months ago.
Frontex has in 2016 511.371 people registered which is illegal, the EU tried to come inside. That is 72 percent less than in 2015, when there 1.822.177 registrations were. A person multiple attempts is still registered. Most of the refugees are Syrian, or claim to be.
