Recensieoverzicht: ‘Our Boys is a Dutch version Magic Mike’

The new film from Tuscan Wedding director: Johan Nijenhuis, Our Boys, since Thursday to be seen in Dutch cinemas. Reviewers agree: the movie is much similar to Magic Mike, but the performances of Jim Bakkum let to be desired.

The Volkskrant – Two stars

“Our guys let themselves look like a brutal, explicit, and literal imitation of proven, successful ads, video clips and movie scenes. The blunt, Dutch openness with which that happens makes him in his own way sympathetic. Still, that method is not to be confused with quality. Bakkum has natural charisma and is a good header, but it is as an actor not compete with Channing Tatum, star of Magic Mike. The lack of own ideas, convincing game, too, eventually felt.”

The Telegraph – one and a Half stars

“There’s nothing wrong with flat humor, there’s nothing wrong with strippers and there’s nothing wrong with Bakkums body. Where it goes wrong is with the gross underestimation of the public. That don’t have anything uitgespeld to get. Also women in the film enjoy a stripact, are literally to stupid called. Insults that you don’t wegtovert with a glitterstring.”

The Watchword – Three stars

“Johan Nijenhuis does not make any effort to be a source of inspiration to conceal. This is the Dutch version of Magic Mike, nothing more, nothing less. A lot of male nudity, held together by a quasiserieus story about the social position of the strippers. (…) If the actor falls Bakkum by the basket when he is against the slot, a turnaround in his character must achieve. Sultry look while he ice out of the navel of his girlfriend slurps, however, he is fine.”

AD – Three stars

“Smart choice of director Johan Nijenhuis to the perfect all-rounder Jim Bakkum to tie for the lead role of his romantic stripperkomedie. The actor has a good head and appealing muscular body. (…) Although the most stripscènes almost vulgar, it is fresh to look the man in the role of sexual object. The latest Nijenhuis (Rokjesdag) is not The Full Monty, yet this sexy, pulled out of the clay the lord is not wrong.”

Faithful – Two stars

“With Bakkum and his trained torso at the helm created a family drama with broken dialogues, the audacity lacks to be really funny or sexy: mannenbasten in slow motion to be natgespoten we know from commercials. ‘Our boys’ is a gentle drama about fathers and sons and goeiige people who are forgiving, trying-to-be. For this they can their shirt just as well continue.”
