Recensieoverzicht: Mary Poppins is unabashedly nostalgic

More than half a century after the original was embraced by an audience of millions, it appears the sequel to the colorful Disney-Mary Poppins musical. What is the Dutch film critics of Mary Poppins Returns?
The Telegraph – a 3.5 star

“The special for this sequel written narration, where the Banks family their house is about to lose, feels somewhat forced. But looking at what you know of the original, the storyline is less important. The colourful characters, among them Meryl Streep as Mary’s delightfully eccentric aunt Tatiana and Lin-Manuel Miranda as old-fashioned lantaarnaansteker, together with the new, excellent mix of songs this new Poppins a pleasure to watch and listen. Since La La Land, was there not more, as fine streets gezwierd and lanterns hung.”

the Volkskrant – 3 stars

“The plot is straightforward: a geldzuchtige bank manager (Colin Firth) tries to seize the family home of the Banks. Meanwhile, Poppins took the children to the wonderful fantasiewerelden and there are cheerful songs, and nice dances, often in the company of lantaarnaansteker Jack (Lin-Manuel Miranda). Actress Blunt has the correct Poppins-gaze; she plays the role slightly self-conscious than her predecessor Julie Andrews, without by shooting in irony. (…) Mary Poppins Returns, do not put any new steps: it is a film wrapped Mary Poppins-museum tour. But the unabashed nostalgia makes it vervolgdeel certainly pleasurable.”

The Watchword

“Mary Poppins Returns will real many family enchant, but it remains a pity that Disney is so afraid of seems to create something new. Of course, the company must provide to its shareholders thinking and nostalgia in the film world now a safer investment than innovation. Any confidence that the current generation of makers, itself has good ideas, it would be Disney, however, adorn. Good to see that you have a second Mary Poppins, but why does he have so very, very close to the original?”

Fidelity – 4 stars

“The message is about a father who is not only his work life, but also for his children, was in 1964 just a little more innovative than this adventure around an impending move. But the energy and the fun are just as prominent as then. (…) And only the visual effects that Disney now could extract, that the film is, indeed, a contemporary version earned.”

AD – 4 stars

“Mary Poppins Returns is a worthy sequel to the jarenzestigklassieker. The new songs are catchy and beautifully brought to the screen in lavish decors vol zuurstokkleuren. Blunt carries the film. The negentigplusser Dick Van Dyke, known from the original film, dives to the castle.”
