Recensieoverzicht: Black Mirror-film Bandersnatch ‘theatrical experience’

Netflix came last week with a premiere: for the first time brought the streaming service an interactive movie, where the viewer may meebepalen over the course of the storylines. Critics are divided on the project, which is part of the popular sciencefictionreeks Black Mirror.

Humo – 2.5 stars

“A good movie sucks you into that craziness, at the mercy of the whims of the main character, but here the many active moments to ensure that you are constantly aware of your role as an outsider. Throw the soothing soup of metareferenties, the breaking of the fourth wall, and a few obligatory flashbacks on top of it, and you will, ironically enough, for an interactive movie, a rather detached viewing experience.”

The Hollywood Reporter gives no stars

“Bandersnatch is the most interesting when you as the viewer makes decisions that lead to a relatively linear and coherent storyline. There are different endings, but which are not all satisfactory. At least one of them makes for a rather abrupt end and that leads to your back again will begin.”

“If you would like to be able to choose what music is Stefan (the main character, red.) listen and or he his father must kill him, then shall Bandersnatch, you’re right to appeal. But even the most curious of people will be at a given moment, a bit tired when this is given its shine loses.”

The Independent – four stars

“This interactive way of telling a story has been done before, but not on such a visible, sophisticated and mature way. (…) In total, there is more than 2.5 hours of footage available, but most viewers will after about 60 to 75 minutes to be ready. Who will not see.”

“What at the most will gnaw, is that the nicest things from Bandersnatch ‘old-fashioned’. Many parts of this could also be achieved without the interactive element.”
