In recent years, with several of the women with breast implants and a rare form of cancer determined. In the United States, nine deaths associated with ALCL, a form of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
In Belgium, four women in recent years, the rare form of cancer, according to the Belgian Federal Agency for Medicines and Health products (FAMHP).
“The data we have suggest that the risk of this cancer is greater in women with an implant,” says FAGG-spokeswoman Ann Eeckhout in The Newspaper. Why that is, is not clear yet.
According to the FAMHP continues to the chance to get the rare cancer to get, even after a breast augmentation is small and it is not necessary implants preventative removal. There will also be no ban on certain types or brands. Fatal cases are not yet known in Belgium.
In the United States, nine deaths have been associated with the rare kankersoort. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) had on February 1, 359 reported cases of ALCL as a possible result of implants, writes CNN.
The cancer affects cells in the immune system and is usually located in the scar tissue around an implant. “Based on all the information we have, it can be suggested that women with implants is very low, but have an increased risk of developing ALCL,” said the FDA.
In 2011 be the FDA for the first time on the possibility of a small risk of developing ALCL after getting implants. Since then, much data has been collected about the possible link between implants and ALCL.
So it seems the problem is more to do with crude implants than with smooth ones. Of the 231 reported cases to the FDA that contain information about the type of implant went in 203 cases to make rough copies.
In the United States have some ten to eleven million women have breast implants, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and the Plastic Surgeon Foundation. Less than ten patients each year are diagnosed with ALCL that may be the result of an implant.
In many cases where a lymphoma was, it was enough to make the implant and the scar tissue around it to remove it. Some women have chemotherapy and radiation needed.
According to the FDA, should doctors take into account the possibility that a lymphoma for a long time after a surgery for breast implants arises. If women no problems have, according to the FDA, however, no reason to make them remove.
