Prosecutor: Police shoot vehicle to stop, is the killing of driver

FALL RIVER, Mass. – Massachusetts authorities say police are responding to a report of possible shots fired shots on a vehicle to prevent it from leaving, killing the driver.

The Bristol County district attorney’s office says Fall River police saw several vehicles leaving the area after responding to the scene on Sunday night.

Authorities say the officer fired on a car to keep it from leaving. The 19-year-old driver, Larry Ruiz-Barreto, of New Bedford, was struck. He was taken to Charlton Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

A few minutes later, the police responded to a disturbance in the hospital, arrested five people on disorderly conduct and disturbing the peace charges. The police says the shooting and the hospital disturbance are connected.
