Prominent Vietnamese blogger gets five years in prison

The Vietnamese blogger Nguyen Hu Vinh is in appeal, sentenced to five years in prison. His assistant must be of the right three years behind bars disappear.

That reports Reuters Thursday. The 60-year-old blogger and his 36-year-old assistant Nguyen Thi Minh Thuy were found guilty of “abuse of the right to freedom and democracy and the ignoring of the interest of the state”.

The High Council maintains this penalty in march by a lower court was imposed. Vinh and Thuy were appealing this case. The duo was in 2014 arrested.

Hard approach

Vinh began in 2013 with blogging, and has published links to articles from the state media, but also to articles by activists. According to the court, the duo has the truth about Vietnamese leaders and the state’s “twisted”.

The case attracts much attention, partly due to the background of Vinh. The former policeman and private detective is the son of a minister.

Human Rights Watch has repeatedly called for the two bloggers free. Mensenorganisaties point more on the hard approach of critics of the regime in Vietnam.
