Producers want to suikertaboe off
Sugar producers are tired of their product as ‘poison’ is dismissed. “We eat for thousands of years sugar, and now it’s suddenly poison,” says suikerbietenteler Dirk de Lugt.
The producers came Monday during the Big Suikerdebat in The Hague, reports AD Tuesday.
“We get blamed for a lot of,” says Albert Markusse, managing director of sugar producer Suiker unie. “It’s always about sugar and never about the other calories.”
In 1987, at a Dutchman 128 grams of sugar per day, that was twenty years later, six grams less. In 1987 was 33 percent of the people are overweight, now is already 50 percent.
The Diabetes foundation, also present at the debate, is not in favour of sugar. They would also like to have a suikertaks enter, ” says director Hanneke Dessing against the newspaper. “That is also a signal to consumers: please note that here is a lot of sugar in it.”
The suikerbranche sees the solution primarily in education. Required less sugar in the products, the sector would not. “If you find that you have less sugar to eat, you have to do that. Freedom of choice,” Paul Mesters, food technologist at Sugar Union. “Consumers need to us not to demonize. We do not supply to the animal feed industry, otherwise we would also have the guilt that dogs are too thick.”
