Prince William has been appointed to the new royal position by his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, Kensington Palace announced on Saturday.
“The Queen has appointed Prince William as Lord High Commissioner to the General Assembly by a letter churchscotland this year,” the palace said in a statement.
Prince William, hold the position for a year. It will have no effect on the current royal title-the Duke of Cambridge, england.

According to the Kensington Palace, the Lord High Commissioner is to be responsible for the attendance of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, ” as an observer,” in addition to the other responsibilities.
“The Lord High Commissioner makes opening and closing addresses at the annual General Meeting, and to report to her Majesty the queen in her duties. For the duration of the General Assembly, as the Sovereign grant to the Lord High Commissioner be authorized to stay at the Palace of Holyroodhouse and st. giles’, at this time, His Grace will receive a Guard of Honour, a 21 Gun Salute, and the keys to the City of Edinburgh,” the statement explained. “It is also common practice for the Lord High Commissioner, for inviting distinguished guests to stay at the Palace, and the provision of hospitality services to the members of the supervisory Board for the shareholders Meeting and to those of you who have contributed to public life in Scotland.”
The statement further: “On the day of the Assembly, the Lord High Commissioner, attended the Meeting to observe the debate. He or she will also be a programme of events in order to be able to reflect on the work of the charity and to the Church.”

Prince William is the first member of the British royal family to be appointed to such a role. The Princess Royal, the Duke of Rothesay, the Duke of York and Earl of Wessex have all previously held the title, according to the statement.

The Duke of Cambridge’s appointment comes at a time of transition for the royal family. Earlier this month, prince, Prince Harry, and Meghan Markle announced their decision to “step back” as a senior member of the royal family. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, england, announced that they were going to earn their own income, and divide their time between the Uk and North America.
This week, Harry left the uk and travelled to Vancouver, Canada in order to reunite with Meghan, and their son, Archie, for eight months.
