President of Kazakhstan announces after almost thirty years of resignation

The president of Kazakhstan, Nursultan Nazarbayev, has on television his immediate resignation was announced. The 78-year-old Nazerbajev was almost thirty years in power in the former republic of the Soviet Union.

When the Soviet Union in 1991, collapsed, was Nazerbajev already first secretary of the Kazachstaanse communist party. Nazerbajev said that he all the duties of the president transmits to the president of the senate, Kassym-Jomart Tokajev (65).

He reigned as absolute ruler, and the country has, according to observers no free election is known. He is four years ago, a time for six years as a president was re-elected and received 98 percent of the votes. He has the title Leader of the Nation and would be president for life.

Kazakhstan has slightly more inhabitants than the Netherlands, but is almost seventy times larger. The country has many natural resources, but suffers under the growing economic and social problems.

President Nazarbayev of Kazakhstan brought in 2002 an official visit to the Netherlands. On his trip he also brought a visit to Madurodam. ()
