President of Brazil opens the Paralympic Games in Rio

In the Maracana stadium in Rio de Janeiro in the night of Wednesday on Thursday the Paralympic Games opened. The Brazilian president Michel Temer declared the Paralympics open around 2.00 pm.

Athlete Marlou van Rhijn wore during the opening ceremony the Dutch flag. The 24-year-old sprinter won four years ago in London gold in the 200 metres and won a silver medal in the 100 metres. Princess Margriet of the netherlands welcomed, on behalf of the Netherlands from the stands to the athletes.

A record number of 126 Dutch athletes will be in Rio in fourteen different sports to participate in. Twenty of them were at the ceremony.

The rest was left in the olympic village because they are short-term in the action. Walked away trainers and facilitators.

Fireworks

Also the president of International Paralympic Committee Sir Phillip Craven made a speech. Herein he praised the athletes and in particular those of the above vluchtelingenteam.

Multiple medal winner in the 200 and 400 meter sprint with Antonio Delfino brought to 2.43 pm the olympic flame into the stadium. The end point was swimmer Coldoaldo Silva. He was the flame ignited in the stadium.

Silva holds the record in the hands of most medals for an athlete in the Paralympics ever. He won 13 paste, including six-time gold, five times silver and two times bronze. After the Olympics in Rio comes to an end his career.

159 countries

At the event a week and a half, close to four thousand athletes from 159 countries. It is the first time that the Paralympic Games in Latin America take place. Four years ago in London was the paralympsiche Orange team is still out of 91 athletes. Then conquered the Netherlands, ten times gold, ten silver and nineteen bronze medals. That score wants to be the Dutch team in Brazil to surpass.
