Dentists in the European Union from the end of 2022 no mercury is allowed any more to use in fillings. The environment committee of the European Parliament voted Thursday for tighter European legislation on this matter.

The toxic metal is harmful to human health and the environment. The EU member states are now on the issue of bending.

Mep Bas Eickhout (GroenLinks), reacts pleased. Of the approximately 75 tonnes of mercury per year in the EU, according to him almost a quarter to the dentistry. In the Netherlands dentists mercury, incidentally, but in dribs and drabs.

Eickhout please note that some countries will be demanding though. “We ask them the health of their citizens first.”

Kwikmijnen in Europe were at the beginning of this century closed. The European Union decided in 2007 to a kwikverbod in new barometers. In 2011 was followed by an export ban.
